第22回世界テコンドー選手権大会の特集記事番外編として、大会に参加した海外の師範・コーチへのインタビューをご紹介します。
第7回目はアメリカ代表選手のMarvin Hernandez3段へのインタビュー記事です。
大会の感想やアメリカでのテコンドーの様子などをお伺いしました。

世界大会について
Marvin Hernandez3段、インタビューにご協力くださりありがとうございます。
早速ですが、今回の世界選手権全体の感想をお聞かせください。
今回の世界大会の私の印象は素晴らしかったの一言につきます。さまざまな国の選手が集まり、スポーツシップに則って彼らが鍛えた才能を分かち合うことは、他に類を見ないものでした。
続いて、今回の世界大会で最も印象に残っていることをお聞かせください。
この大会で最も印象に残っていることは、私が常に自分らしくいれたことです。
特にこれまでの中で最も厳しい戦いに立ち向かったことは私にとって最大の勝利と感じています。
今大会では、どのカテゴリーでも勝てませんでしたが、勝つまで戦いは終わりません！
今大会に参加した日本選手団の印象をお聞かせください。
日本選手団は世界のテコンドー界のなかで非常に競争力があるチームだと感じました。彼らは今大会で複数の金メダルを獲得しました。
また、お互いに助け合うことで強いチームになっていると感じました。
今大会に向けてアメリカ代表選手たちはどのように準備したのですか？
アメリカ代表の選手たちは、この大会のために3年間猛練習を積んできました。また、選手の半数は世界選手権初出場でした。

ハードなトレーニングを続けてください！そして、 すべての選手と練習生に栄光を！
ちなみに私は近い将来、日本を訪れるつもりです。
アメリカでのテコンドーについて
アメリカではテコンドーはどれくらい人気がありますか？
最近、テコンドーはニューヨークでとても人気があります。
どの地区を訪れるかにもよりますが、様々な通りテコンドーの道場を見ることができます。
最もテコンドーが盛んなのはどの世代ですか？
私の国では、ティーンエイジャーや子供たちが一番練習しています。
一方で大人は体を鍛えるためのエクササイズとしてテコンドーの練習をしています。
アメリカについて
アメリカの観光名所や食べ物を教えてください。
私の住むニューヨークは、タイムズスクエア、自由の女神、グランド・セントラル、エンパイア・ステーツ・ビル、ロックフェラー・センターがあることから、アメリカでナンバーワンの観光地とだと思います。
また、ニューヨークは世界中の文化が集まっています。そして、最も人気のある食べ物は、日本食、イタリア料理、韓国料理です。

Please tell us about your impressions of the World Championships in general.
My impression on these World Championship was marvelous. Seeing different countries gatherer
together and share their talent as sports showmanship, was one of a kind.
Please tell us what left the biggest impression on you at this world tournament.
My biggest impression that I left out on this tournament was be myself. Facing my toughest
battles within myself was the greatest victory. Even though I didn’t win in any of the categories I
still win. The battle haven’t finished until I win.
Please tell us your impressions of the Japanese team.
My impression on the Japanese Team they are very competitive. They have accomplished to win
multiple gold medals on this tournament. Also they are very supportive to one another which
make them strong team.
Which generation of people in your country practices taekwondo the most?
Well in my country teenagers and children are the ones that practice the most. While adults they
just practice Taekwondo to strength their body.
How popular is taekwondo as a martial art in your country?
In New York City. Taekwondo is very popular nowadays. You see them in different streets
depending on what borough you will visit.
How long have your country’s representative athletes been practicing for this world championship?
Our Team USA athletes being practicing for this tournament for 3 years intense training. Half our
athletes were competing for their first time at the world championships.
Please tell us about your country’s tourist attractions and recommended foods.
NYC consider as the number 1 tourists attractions in USA because of Time Square, Statue of
Liberty, Grand Central, Empire States building and Rockefeller Center. Since this state has multiple
cultures around the world. The most popular foods are Japanese foods, Italian food and Korean
food.
Please give a message to the Japanese national taekwondo team and Japanese taekwondo trainees.
Keep training hard. Success for all athletes and trainees. I willing to 8. visit Japan near future.
